Discover Ferrara's 4 historic breweries

If you've arrived in Ferrara to see the 'Boss', or to attend one of the other events that animate our musical programme, is there anything better than a nice beer? Possibly served with a quality hamburger or a crunchy crostino.

Here then are the 4 historical breweries to recharge your rock spirit!

Club Weizen

Barbara and Bobo, behind the imposing bar with 12 beers on tap, have been running this place for almost twenty years. Here you will be spoilt on choice, whether you are in the mood for something more traditional, such as a perfectly tapped Guinness, or if you want to taste one of the new Ferrara craft beers from Lost Road. You will find an incredible variety of piade and sandwiches, including vegetarian options, as well as 24 crispy crostini (but the classic No.1 always remains a certainty). And that's not all, because at Club Weizen you can find great whiskies and gluten-free beer. If you then want to sober up with a nice walk, behind the restaurant, crossing the Burana canal, you will be just a stone's throw from the city walls, at the height of the suggestive Baluardo dell'Amore and its Archaeological Park.

Wilson’s Pub

Take a dip in a pool of Hoegaarden or relax with a pint of Chouffe Blonde in this historic pub. However, to quench your hunger, you absolutely must try the scottona burger, choosing from the 3 weights that Enrico, the manager, always meticulously weighs and grills with love and skill. You can also delight in a pulled pork or a tasty piada with sausage. There are several settings, depending on whether you are looking for privacy and quiet. The kindness of the Wilson's staff here will make you feel truly at home. For a night-time stroll, you can continue along Via Porta Mare to admire the nearby Piazza Ariostea, and if it's daytime yet, while waiting to reward yourself with a beer, you can visit Parco Massari, the Botanical Garden, the City Countryside or the Jewish Cemetery.

Ustariaza

Immediately you walk in, you will be thrown into the world of the managers, who have populated the walls with a wonderful collection of comic gadgets, vintage posters and beer cans. Just a few metres from Porta Paola and close to the MEIS, the intimate and unique ambience of this place will envelop you while you sip your beer. Every Ferrara native knows that you go to Ustariaza above all for the toasted bread with mascarpone cheese, the perfect wrapping for their sandwiches filled with thoughtful combinations and fresh produce.

Birraria Giori

At Giori's, you will be lounging in one of the most beautiful and vibrant squares in Ferrara, Piazza Savonarola, right next to the Estense Castle moat. Instantly you will notice the characteristic cast-iron gazebo from the late 19th century and the expanse of umbrellas, under which the temperature is always strangely pleasant, even on the sultriest days. Once you have enjoyed your cold beer with a view, you can turn to the choice of bread - be it a handmade piada from Romagna, pumpkin or wine, or a filone from Ferrara - to be stuffed with quality cold cuts (such as the 'zia ferrarese' or our typical salama da taglio). If you have a little place left, you can finish with a nice homemade dessert.
