Ferrara lights up...with art!

Ferrara at Christmas is the magic of lights, good food and shopping, but it is also, and unfailingly, art and culture!

During your stay in the city, you will have the opportunity to visit one of the many exhibitions open during the Christmas festivities.
From the great art of the 20th century to Jewish culture, passing through a small but precious excursus on post-modernism, our exhibitions will truly satisfy all tastes!
In the splendid setting of the Castello Estense you will find two exhibitions.Carlo Guarienti "La realtà del sogno" (The Reality of Dreams), open until 20 February 2023, will offer over one hundred works, including paintings and sculptures, through which you can discover the artist's wide-ranging and articulated path, marked by a constant, as much as coherent, process of metamorphosis. Starting from realism and passing through surrealism, Guarienti finally arrived at a painting populated by mental geometries, of pure, two-dimensional or solid forms, organised in rigorous perspective spaces. As Vittorio Sgarbi pointed out, in his works "we find what metaphysical painting wanted to represent, from its very beginnings, with De Chirico's research. An essential dimension, totally purified, of pure thought, which comes to distil and therefore distances emotionality. Purely mental painting."

Also at the Castello Estense, in the splendid Sala dei Comuni, another small but interesting exhibition awaits you: "La memoria infedele: la seduzione delle immagini da de Chirico a Schifano". (Unfaithful Memory: the seduction of images from de Chirico to Schifano). Twelve precious works including paintings, works on paper and sculptures, endowed with such an evocative power as to be able to narrate an important chapter in the history of 20th century art in Italy: postmodernism.

Moving on to the area of the Herculean Addition, next to the elegant Massari Park, the Pavilion of Contemporary Art hosts the exhibition "Piero Guccione - Mistero in piena luce (Mystery in full light)". Until 8 January 2023 you can admire and appreciate the delicate but intense nuances of this great pictorial work. You will have the opportunity to retrace Guccione's entire oeuvre in two chapters: his years in Rome (1957-1972) and his return to Sicily (1970-2014). More than seventy works, including paintings and pastels, will be on display, showing the Sicilian artist's favourite themes, such as the relationship between urban space and nature, sky and sea, as well as some homages to the past.

Until 5 February 2023 you can also visit the exhibition "Sotto lo stesso cielo - Under the same sky" at the MEIS - Museum of Italian Judaism and the Shoah. An interactive exhibition that will let you discovery the fundamental themes of the feast of Sukkot, during which Jewish People remember the difficulties faced during the forty years spent in the desert, overcome thanks to the providence of Heaven and collaboration, sharing.

And don't forget that on 26 and 27 December, 1 January (from the afternoon), 2 and 3 January and for Epiphany, the Estense Castle and Civic Museums will be open. You can find the list and the possibility of booking at this link https://www.comune.fe.it/prenotazionemusei
On Christmas Day the Museums will be closed - because Christmas is spent with the family eating cappelletti and salama da sugo - but the Temple of San Cristoforo alla Certosa will be open.

So, what are you waiting for?

Christmas in Ferrara awaits you with its beauty and its events!
