"Mistero in piena luce - Mystery in full light", Piero Guccione at PAC

The art of Piero Guccione, one of the most representative artists of 20th century pictorial research, waits for you at the PAC - Contemporary Art Pavillion in Ferrara from October 7th, 2022 to January 8th, 2023.

"A painting by Guccione gives a sense of love, of poetry:
the eye rests on it and lingers on it as on something rare,
of recreation, that still makes us feel valid, authentic,
the beauty-truth equation'.
Leonardo Sciascia, 1985

Words, those of the famous Sicilian writer and fellow countryman of Piero Guccione, that perfectly describe the exhibition set up inside the rooms of the PAC, and open until January 8th, 2023.

An unmissable opportunity to appreciate the delicate yet intense nuances of the pictorial work of this great artist. More than fifty years have passed since the last exhibition in Ferrara dedicated to Piero Guccione. Today, four years after his death, our city once again hosts the work of the great 20th century master who, quoting art critic Vittorio Sgarbi, "after the death of Fontana, Gnoli and Burri represented the supreme synthesis of figurative and abstract painting" in Italy. During the visit, you will have the opportunity to retrace Guccione's entire oeuvre in two chapters: his years in Rome (1957-1972) and his return to Sicily (1970-2014). More than seventy works, including paintings and pastels, will be on display, showing the Sicilian artist's favourite themes, such as the relationship between urban space and nature, sky and sea, as well as some homages to the past.

Guccione's research, which led him to take an interest in urban landscapes, developed after 1954, the year he moved to Rome. Intrigued by the urban environment, the artist defines an unprecedented and innovative slant for the works that characterise this lively period. Towards the end of the 1960s, a new context will give way to a more metaphysical and Hopperian style of painting, which is exaggerated by his return to Sicily, which will lead Guccione to focus on the sea, its vibrations and variations.
Guccione paints the infinite. The landscape becomes an inner landscape, crossing the boundary between the figuration he relied on and the 'other' space, which is a purely mental space. If you too are fascinated by the work of this great artist, you just have to come and visit us in Ferrara!

The exhibition is organised by the Ferrara Arte Foundation and the Art Museum Service of the Municipality of Ferrara in collaboration with Il Cigno Arte and the Piero Guccione Archive. It was curated by Vasilij Gusella and conceived by Vittorio Sgarbi and Lorenzo Zichichi.
