Lapidary Museum - Hisorical Notes

A small but interesting museum, a short walk from the better-known Schifanoia Museum, within the former 15th-century Church of Santa Liberata.

Lapidary Museum - The Visit

In the halls of the Civico Lapidario you can discover a rich collection of Roman-era funerary handicrafts from the Ferrara area. Most of the collection is dated between the first half of the 1st century AD and the 3rd century AD, a time when the use of writing on stone and marble began to decline throughout the Roman world.
Prominent among all the pieces in the collection is the large sarcophagus of the Aurelii (3rd century AD), considered among one of the masterpieces of Ravenna funerary art of the period, and the small sarcophagus of the child Neon, from the necropolis of Voghenza.

MUSEUM HEADQUARTERS. Dedicated to Santa Maria delle Grazie, this small church known as Santa Liberata was built in 1470 as a tribute to a miraculous image depicting the Virgin Mary with Santa Libera. Reduced to a warehouse and stable following the Napoleonic invasion of 1796, it was finally purchased by the City of Ferrara in 1979.
