Natural History Museum

Purely characterized by the architectural taste of the 20th century, the Ferrara City Museum of Natural History is the first natural history museum in Emilia Romagna that historically developed in line with the eco-museum system model.

Natural History Museum -  Historical Notes

Established in 1872, the museum holds a very rich scientific collection. The researchers involved in setting up the museum have for years been engaged in various research activities as well as education on environmental and wildlife issues, particularly in relation to the habitats of the Delta del Po and the protected areas of the Emilia-Romagna Region.

Natural History Museum - The Visit

The exhibition tour of this museum has brought generations of Ferrara residents closer to the amazing world of natural and earth sciences, and we are sure it will do the same for you! You will be able to explore a rich documentation of the ecosystems and fauna of the Po Delta territory, as well as trace back the history of our beautiful planet Earth.

In front of you will be an extensive display of preserved mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds, invertebrates and insects, covering branches of natural sciences such as zoology and entomology. This museum also houses a large collection of fossils, minerals and rocks in the Earth Science sections – you can satisfy the curiosity of the whole family!

Inside the Museum you will also find a specialized library, a reading room and an educational section.

Natural History Museum of Ferrara

You may not know about...

A QUALITY MUSEUM. The Natural History Museum of Ferrara has been awarded the status of "Quality Museum" recognised by the Institute for Cultural Heritage of Emilia-Romagna.

AN OLD HOSPITAL. The building that houses the City Museum of Natural History was built where the old city hospital once stood. The area chosen for the building is located a few steps away from the Este Castle and had a hospital function until 1927 when works began to move the hospital to Corso Giovecca. Inside the old hospital complex, the famous poet Torquato Tasso was imprisoned between 1579 and 1586.

1900s QUADRANGLE. The building that houses this wonderful museum fits within what is called the Quadrilatero Novecentista (1900s Quadrangle), characterized by early 20th-century rationalist architecture. Built between 1935 and 1937 by Carlo Savonuzzi, in addition to the museum, it includes the Alda Costa school, Conservatorio Girolamo Frescobaldi and Cinema Boldini.
