Pinacoteca Nazionale

A major center of artistic production throughout the Modern Age, Ferrara boasts an exceptionally rich artistic heritage.
The National Gallery of Ferrara was the city’s first true “modern museum.” Over the years, its original collection has been expanded with new works, thanks to significant donations.

History

Founded in 1836, the Gallery was the first public collection of Ferrarese paintings, established by the municipality to prevent the dispersal of the local artistic heritage. It thus became a modern museum dedicated to preserving and promoting Ferrara’s culture and art.

In 1958, the Municipal Gallery was transferred to the State and became the National Gallery. During the bombings of 1944, the building was damaged and a large part of the works kept in storage was lost.

The visit

The National Gallery of Ferrara is housed on the piano nobile of the renowned Palazzo dei Diamanti, in remarkable spaces such as the Hall of Honour and the 16th-century apartments of Virginia de’ Medici.

Here, visitors can explore the vibrant heart of Ferrarese art from the 13th to the 18th century, featuring works by some of Italy’s most celebrated artists, including Jacopo Bellini, Ercole de’ Roberti, Andrea Mantegna, Carpaccio, Dosso Dossi, Bononi, Bastianino, Guercino and Garofalo.

A defining part of the collection is the series of 16th-century altarpieces originating from the city’s churches. Among the most outstanding examples is the imposing Costabili Polyptych, created by Garofalo in collaboration with Dosso Dossi.

FERRARA SAVING BANK COLLECTION. The Cassa di Risparmio di Ferrara (and later the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Ferrara) has placed its collection on deposit at the National Gallery of Ferrara. A gift to the city and its citizens, it represents a shared heritage that is fundamental to the identity and culture of Ferrara.

FOREIGN PAINTERS IN THE GALLERY. It is quite rare to find works by foreign artists among the paintings preserved in the Gallery. During your visit, it can be enjoyable to look out for the Portrait of the Tiepolo Family, painted by the French artist François Guillaume Ménageot in 1801.

The members of the noble Tiepolo family, engaged in the silk trade, are depicted in a carefully composed Neoclassical setting. The painting conveys a serene domestic atmosphere, where the figure of a young noblewoman stands out—her white dress and red silk shawl drawing the eye. She is possibly identified as Elena Tiepolo Milan Massari, a refined and cultured patron of the arts.
