Behind the doors of Palazzo Massari lies one of the most fascinating stories of art collecting in Ferrara. Paintings, private collections and prominent families have passed through these rooms, leaving traces that reveal an important chapter in the city’s artistic and cultural history.

A Gallery Within the Palazzo

The Galleria Massari took shape between the 19th and 20th centuries thanks to the Massari family. Its first catalogue, published in 1901, listed 204 paintings displayed throughout the rooms of the palazzo. Over the following years, the collection continued to grow and was repeatedly studied and reorganised.

Works from the 17th and 18th centuries were displayed alongside more modern pieces, forming a collection that eventually included over 300 catalogued works.

Historical photographs preserved in the Photographic Archive of Ferrara’s Museo Civico d’Arte Antica still offer a glimpse into these rooms, showing what the Massari family interiors once looked like.

From Private Collection to Public Heritage

Over time, the collection was divided, and some of the paintings were acquired by Cassa di Risparmio di Ferrara. Several works later found a home at the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Ferrara, culminating in the permanent donation of the former Massari paintings by Fondazione Estense.

The story of Palazzo Massari offers a different starting point for exploring art in Ferrara: from the rooms of a historic residence to the collections that continue to preserve and share part of the city’s artistic heritage today.
