Recently restored, the residence captivates visitors with its dialogue between eras: 14th-century frescoes coexist with refined contemporary spaces redesigned between 1957 and 1963 by Milanese architect Piero Bottoni.

Historical Notes
Le origini del complesso risalgono al XIV secolo, quando l’edificio apparteneva alla nobile famiglia Dal Sale, da cui deriva uno dei due nomi. Sorge lungo via Giuoco del Pallone, antica strada un tempo animata dagli studenti dell’Università di Ferrara, che qui giocavano alla palla, come ricorda ancora oggi il toponimo.
Il palazzo è celebre per gli straordinari affreschi trecenteschi che decorano i suoi ambienti più prestigiosi: il Salone dei Vizi e delle Virtù e la Sala degli Stemmi, opere del cosiddetto Maestro di Casa Minerbi, attivo tra il 1360 e il 1370.
Questi cicli pittorici, ricchi di simbologie morali e allegoriche, rappresentano uno dei nuclei più importanti della pittura medievale ferrarese, insieme agli affreschi del convento di Sant’Antonio in Polesine.
L’attuale denominazione deriva dalla famiglia Minerbi, che acquistò la proprietà nel XIX secolo. Nel Novecento Giuseppe Minerbi, appassionato collezionista, affidò all’architetto Piero Bottoni un importante intervento di restauro e ridefinizione degli spazi, mentre gli affreschi vennero recuperati nel 1955 da Arturo Raffaldini e Ottorino Nonfarmale, salvandoli dal degrado.

Located on the ground floor of Casa Minerbi - Dal Sale, the Centro Studi Bassaniani (Bassani Study Centre) was established by the City of Ferrara thanks to the generous donation of Professor Portia Anne Prebys, lifelong companion of writer Giorgio Bassani.
The library, archive and exhibition rooms hold over 5,000 books, documents, artworks and personal objects that trace the life and literary legacy of Bassani, author of The Garden of the Finzi-Continis.
Among its treasures is the original furniture from Bassani’s Roman living room, an evocative setting that offers visitors a glimpse into the intimate and intellectual world of one of Italy’s greatest 20th-century authors.
