Waiting for Bruce: a programme waiting for the Boss!

From 5 May, rock comes to town with the Waiting for Bruce! Two weekends, 13 musical events with free admission to welcome Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, coming on 18 May for the concert of the year at Ferrara's Parco Urbano G.Bassani. Not only music: exhibitions and book presentations are also among the events of the festival.

The Waiting for Bruce schedule, therefore, includes two musical events a day on 5, 6, 7 and 12, 13, 14 May, all distributed and spread over different locations in the city.

Let's discover them one by one!

Leo Meconi & LOAD trio

5th May h 20.00
BAR LUDOVICO ARIOSTO - Via Palestro, 9

A young singer-songwriter and guitarist, Leo Meconi grew up with the music of the Boss from which he takes his inspiration. After winning the 'Festival Incanto' in Ravenna and the 'Punto Radio Talent', and making a name for himself in 'A voice for Europe' with an excellent second place, Leo is releasing his first album in 2019, on 5 July: a very important date for the young talent who on 5 July 2016 was invited on stage by Bruce Springsteen in person, in the San Siro stadium, for a duet on Dancing in the Dark! A unique emotion for Leo that became a song, 'Guitar Man'.

THE LOAD? A super trio supporting Leo on his beautiful path.

Miami & The Groovers

5th of May h 22.00
JAZZ CLUB - Via Rampari di Belfiore, 167

In the splendid setting of the city's Jazz Club, inside the historic Torrione, come Miami & The Groovers with their rock and roll energy! Between covers and original pieces, the band with its powerful groove awaits the Boss in its own way.

A very pleasant walk, then, that from Bar Ludovico Ariosto, where we recommend an aperitif listening to Leo Meconi & LOAD trio, will take you to the Torrione, walking straight down Corso Porta Mare. A wonderful end to the evening with good music by Miami & The Groovers and a drink.

Jungleland

6th of May h 19.30
BACKSTAGE - Piazza Trento e Trieste, 52

It starts in the Central Square with what clearly looks like a very specific homage: Jungleland as the magnificent track from 1975's Born to Run.

The hungry and the hunted
Explode into rock 'n' roll bands
That face off against each other out in the street
Down in Jungleland

From the square we take Via Garibaldi towards Factory Grisù in Via Poledrelli to reach Hangar Birrerie at 10pm.

Laura Luisetto & Stefano Ongarato - Slide in soul

7 maggio h 18.00

Graziano Romani e Band

6 maggio h 22.00
HANGAR BIRRERIE - Via Mario Poledrelli, 21

At the Hangar, the great Graziano Romani and his band are the stars. Romani began his career in 1981 by founding the Rocking Chairs, a line-up that toured all over Italy with both original songs and covers, including, of course, a fine selection of songs by the Boss. The band broke up after four records, two of which were recorded between NYC and Nashville: while bass, drums and guitar toured with Ligabue, Romani devoted himself to his solo project in Italian.

Crossing names such as Massimo Riva (well known to Vasco Rossi fans), Max Cottafavi (Ligabue), but also Elio e le Storie Tese, Wilko of the Rats, and many others, Graziano Romani's 90s were consumed by superbands, transient projects, and strong friendships.

1997 is the year of One Step Up, Two Steps Back, an international tribute to Bruce Springsteen: among names such as Elvis Costello, David Bowie, Joe Cocker, the very Italian Rocking Chairs appear and Romani's voice on 'Restelss nights'.

Today, Graziani collaborates with a range of international and national personalities, always remaining one of the finest voices in Italian rock, and always maintaining his visceral passion for the Boss: a musical career that has not wanted to miss a thing.

From Kafé Bacchelli we move slowly towards the Ferrara University Sports Centre complex to sit at a table in its restaurant, Le Querce, and enjoy the second Sunday concert.

Enrico Cipollini & Skyhorses

7th of May h 21.30
CUS LE QUERCE - Via Gramicia, 41

Folk and blues come from Ferrara with Enrico Cipollini and the Skyhorses (Iarin Munari drums, Roberto Cattani bass, Fabio Cremonini violin). A blues singer-songwriter from Ferrara, Cipollini presents his solo project after touring far and wide with his previous bands Violassenzio, Underground Railroad and Free Jam. A first album, Stubborn Will, allows the singer-songwriter and his band to go far beyond national borders, reaching the United States. In 2020, Crossing, the band's second album, was released, with a country, folk and blues soul like its creator. In 2021 Cipollini is selected to participate in the prestigious Delta Blues in Rovigo and Muggia Blues in the Trieste area. Today in Ferrara, he pays tribute to the Boss a few steps away from the venue of the big event.

The first weekend has flown by, we rush towards the second one to find out the stars!
Friday 12th of May sees the return of Bruce Springsteen's live shows, and we start from the square:

Les Irlandiis – from Dublin to Bruce: The Irish/Seeger Session

12th of May h 19.30
FERRARA STORE - P.zza Repubblica, 23

But are we in Ferrara or Dublin? In Piazza della Repubblica comes Irish folk with the folk trio Les Irlandiis. From pub-songs to a passion for Bruce Springsteen: fun and excitement are guaranteed!

An aperitif in company and a quick stroll along Via Garibaldi to reach Factory Grisù and the Hangar Birrerie inside. The night is young!

John Strada and his band

12th of May h 21.30
HANGAR BIRRERIE - Via Mario Poledrelli, 21

30 years of music for John Strada; almost ten years since the fateful Light of the day in 2015, in New Jersey: during the charity event to raise funds for the cure against Parkinson's disease, the rocker from Twelve Morelli walked on the same stage as the Boss, with the Boss. And that meeting at the Wonder Bar, that emotional handshake. This is the transport that John Strada brings to the stage together with his band, this is the memory and emotion. A necessary and heartfelt tribute that Strada told La Nuova Ferrara for the Simply the Boss podcast: listen to the episode HERE.

On Saturday 13th of May, we move from the Palazzo dei Diamanti to Piazza Travaglio via the historic centre: an exciting Saturday amidst excellent music, history and tradition in Ferrara, always looking forward to the big event.

Organic 3 - trio di Roberto Formignani

13th of May h 20.30
CAFFÈ DEI DIAMANTI - C.so Ercole I d'Este, 19

No more suitable setting than the perfection of the Palazzo dei Diamanti, in the museum's brand new café, to host three blues stars, well known in the city and beyond. Here come the Organic 3 led by Maestro Roberto Formignani on guitar, with Marco Mantovani on keyboards and Roberto Poltronieri on drums. Jazz and blues between the 60s and 70s, strictly instrumental, for the professors - they are teachers at the well-known Modern Music School of Ferrara - with important careers behind them, notable collaborations on their curricula, and just as much future fortune.

EmmeColletti

13th of May h 22.00
ORCO BACCO - Piazza del Travaglio, 6

From Renazzo the incredible Colletti family: brothers Marco, Marcello, Mattia and Michele, together with cousin Maurizio, to pay homage to singer-songwriter music at ORco BAcco in Piazza Travaglio. The splendid Porta Paola, a comfortable expanse just a few steps from the evocative walls of Ferrara, and the best-known and most engaging singer-songwriters. Our Saturday can end like this!

No fewer than three dates conclude the Waiting for Bruce music festival. Sunday 14 May starts with a double date at 6.30 pm:

Aperitivo danzante Swing e Rock&Roll con Martini and the Olives e la Scuola di ballo di Alice Formignani

14th of May  h 18.30
ENOTECA DA MASSIMO - Galleria Matteotti

Not just music, but a dance party! In the heart of the old town, the most energetic event of the festival. Swing, boogie and rock'n'roll, masterfully interpreted by Martini and the Olives, will be a blank page for the choreography by the dancers of Alice Formignani's dance school. Now that's starting off on the right foot!

Silvia Zaniboni

14th of May h 18.30
CAFFETTERIA SCHIFANOIA - Via Scandiana, 21

The city's pride and joy, for the last evening of the festival, Ferrarese guitarist Silvia Zaniboni with her solo project! A student of the aforementioned Ferrara School of Modern Music, and of Roberto Formignani, Silvia has been playing for as long as she can remember. At the age of 13 she was on stage with her first band, and in 2014 she was already Bobby Solo's official guitarist. Caleotta's participation in Italia's Got Talent in 2019, which took the guitarist to the semifinals, guaranteeing her an ever-growing audience. From guitarist to singer-songwriter, Zaniboni now has a debut solo album in distribution, Kozmic Floor, and with this she pays homage to Bruce. Silvia is usually accompanied by the very talented Dallamagnana brothers, Filippo on drums and Michele on bass: for this occasion only Filippo will be present, while Michele will be replaced by Federico Gelmi on bass.

Icio Caravita

14th of May h 18.30
DEGUSTERIA DIVINA - Largo Castello, 22

A true one-man band, the Emilian Icio Caravita calls himself a minstrel. A folk singer-songwriter with a romantic soul, he adds guitar, percussion and harmonica to his voice, guaranteeing an excellent show, also visually. With the unforgettable Casadei, he travelled as far as America and then returned to his solo project in Italy. Winner of the S.I.A.E. award for best songwriter at the Senza Etichetta event, presented to him by Mogol in 2010, the singer-songwriter has an album under his belt and plenty of energy to share with his audience.
