From September through spring, the Claudio Abbado Municipal Theatre brings drama, opera, dance and concerts to Ferrara. Facing the Estense Castle, it is the perfect place to add an evening of live performance to your stay in the city.
The Theatre
Opened in 1798 and facing the Estense Castle, Ferrara’s Claudio Abbado Municipal Theatre combines the atmosphere of a historic Italian-style theatre with a varied programme of live performances.
From September through spring, you can choose from drama, opera, contemporary dance, ballet and classical music, with seasons curated by the Fondazione Teatro Comunale and a concert programme organised by Ferrara Musica; performances for children and families are also part of the calendar. Five tiers of boxes, frescoes and 19th-century stucco decorations provide an elegant setting, making the theatre itself part of the experience.
Since 2014, it has been named after conductor Claudio Abbado, who served as its artistic director for many years. Check the events calendar or the theatre’s official programme to find a performance to add to your stay in Ferrara.
