Palio di Ferrara 2024

The Palio was formalised in 1279 and quickly became the symbol of a glorious and fascinating Renaissance. Since then rituals and deadlines have only changed slightly, the city's celebration has remained unchanged.

A month of festivities, parades, contests and competitions between the eight Contrade to win the precious banner dedicated to St George, the patron saint of Ferrara. Figures in original costumes parade through the streets of the city centre and acrobatic flag-throwing contests in Piazza del Municipio accompany us to the spectacular horse race in Piazza Ariostea.

The 2024 edition of the Palio di Ferrara consists of several events in May; the date of the races has been set for Saturday 25 May in Piazza Ariostea

MAGNIFICENT PROCESSION
With over 1000 participants in Renaissance costume, the contrade parade along Corso Giovecca to reach the Estense Castle.

RACE TO THE PALIO
Piazza Ariostea
The Palio races are held in memory of the extraordinary palio held to celebrate the coronation of Borso d'Este as Duke of Ferrara.

There are four races, preceded by the historical parade:
of the putti for the red San Romano 'palio';
of the putte for the green palio of San Paolo;
of the donkeys for the white San Maurelio 'palio';
of the horses for the yellow palio of San Giorgio.
