In the splendid setting of Piazza Castello, next to the Estense Castle, the eight contrade (districts) pay homage to the Duke of Ferrara, bringing gifts of local products, handicraft objects, and performing games and choreographies in his presence that revive the atmosphere of the great Este era.
The events mark the weeks of anticipation for the Ferrara Palio Races, scheduled this year for Saturday 25 May.
This will be a unique opportunity to get in touch with the true essence of the Palio and its tradition, made up of art, theatre, entertainment and historical research.
Each Contrada will offer the Duke a new and original show, in which hundreds of costumed figures will recount a particular aspect or anecdote of the life and culture of the Duchy of Este during the Renaissance.
Dames and knights, flag-wavers and musicians, dancers, jesters and fire-eaters come together for a short but intense and evocative ceremony that offers the emotion of a plunge into the history of Ferrara and the Este family.
