Palazzo Prosperi-Sacrati Reopens After Thirty Years, Marking a New Chapter for the Quadrivio degli Angeli

Some buildings have a way of standing out, even in silence. Palazzo Prosperi-Sacrati is one of them: elegant and imposing, it overlooks Corso Ercole I d’Este, just a short walk from Palazzo dei Diamanti, at the heart of one of the most iconic crossroads of Renaissance Ferrara.

Today, the palace takes centre stage once again thanks to an extensive restoration and enhancement project. Closed to the public for almost thirty years, it is now preparing to begin a new chapter in its history, with a cultural purpose designed to enrich the city's heritage and visitor experience.

A Jewel of the Ferrarese Renaissance

Palazzo Prosperi-Sacrati stands in the heart of the Addizione Erculea, the ambitious urban expansion commissioned by Duke Ercole I d’Este at the end of the 15th century. This visionary project transformed the face of Ferrara forever, introducing broad avenues, carefully planned perspectives and monumental palaces that embody the city's unique balance between elegance and grandeur.

The palace occupies a prominent position at the Quadrivio degli Angeli, alongside Palazzo dei Diamanti, Palazzo Turchi di Bagno and Palazzo Bevilacqua. Construction began in 1493, and the building is especially renowned for its magnificent marble portal, considered one of the finest examples of monumental Renaissance sculpture in Ferrara.

While Palazzo dei Diamanti immediately captures attention with its distinctive diamond-point façade, Palazzo Prosperi-Sacrati offers a different kind of beauty. More understated, perhaps, but equally captivating: its grand entrance serves as a theatrical gateway, inviting visitors into the refined world of Renaissance Ferrara.

The Restoration: What's New

The restoration has involved both the palace interiors and its historic garden, with works designed to prepare the building for its future cultural and museum functions.

Inside, the project has brought renewed attention to architectural and decorative features uncovered during the restoration, alongside remarkable spaces such as the eighteenth-century monumental staircase and the elegant elliptical spiral staircase.

The historic garden will also play a key role in the palace's new identity. More than simply a green space, it will become an integral part of the visitor experience—a peaceful interlude among galleries, architecture and carefully framed perspectives, perfectly reflecting the quieter, more intimate side of Ferrara that often reveals its greatest beauty through subtlety.

Towards a New Cultural Hub

Palazzo Prosperi-Sacrati is set to become a new cultural destination for the city. The project aims to host exhibitions, events, community initiatives and activities dedicated to celebrating Ferrara's artistic and cultural heritage.

Its location is particularly significant: just a short walk from Palazzo dei Diamanti, close to Spazio Antonioni and within easy reach of Palazzo Massari. Together, these landmarks create an increasingly rich cultural district where the Renaissance meets the twentieth century and contemporary artistic expression.

Once regularly open to visitors, Palazzo Prosperi-Sacrati will become another essential stop along Corso Ercole I d'Este. Begin at the Castello Estense, continue to Palazzo dei Diamanti, pause at the Quadrivio degli Angeli, and let Ferrara do what it does best: surprise you with quiet elegance.
