Ferrara City Walls

Imagine a long path surrounded by greenery in which you can completely forget the chaos of the city. Now imagine that this path is easily accessible from all points of the city: in Ferrara, it really only takes a short walk to find yourself in a natural setting that will allow you to completely disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday urban life! We are talking about the Walls of Ferrara, which make up a green belt for the city, an impressive 9 kilometres.
A path of immeasurable historical value and at the same time a very pleasant bicycle and pedestrian path excellent for taking a walk with your family or, if you have some time, to reach the various points of interest in the city while in nature.

How about a different way to discover the history of the Walls of Ferrara, from its origins to the most recent restoration? Discover the Mura Aperte project and have a cutting-edge experience using augmented reality.

Open-Air Gym

The walls are an ideal place for Ferrara residents to practice sports activities. Since they are easily accessible from the centre along their entire route, the walls constitute an excellent open-air gym.
To support and promote sports and recreational practices, several points equipped with open-air gyms have been set up along the route. A trail suitable for everyone, young and old!

Historical Notes

The walls of the city of Ferrara were first built during the Middle Ages but were remodelled in the 15th and 16th centuries during the urban expansion and renewal intervention ordered by Ercole I d'Este, the so-called Addizione Erculea.
For centuries, they were characterised by their military function and for this reason, they were repurposed at various points in history according to the defensive needs of the city.
Today Ferrara’s city walls have completely lost all defensive use. Over the centuries, some parts, in particular, have become large gardens surrounding the Renaissance city. In the 1970s and 1980s, they were subject to a major urban green redevelopment plan, called Addizione Verde – a reference to the Addizione Erculea. This route alternates between flat areas and lawns, rows of trees and areas with thicker, almost woodland vegetation, with bicycle and pedestrian paths.
If you are interested in discovering the entire history of the city walls, we recommend that you drop by the Ferrara Walls Documentation Center, a small interactive museum inside the wonderful Porta Paola.
