Ferrara and its elements: Air.
La Vulandra

As every year Ferrara is filled with a host of flying artworks. Small, medium, and large, kites dye the sky of the Parco Urbano with a thousand different colours. This year La Vulandra arrives from 22 to 25 April to amaze young and old alike.

The International Kite Festival

For more than forty years there has been a group of people who firmly believe that the best thing to do in spring is a kite festival.

The first kite festival was organised on the Po embankment and was such a success that there was immediately the idea to repeat it. In the 1980s, kites were more common than they are now and this allowed the festival to grow into what it is now: the International Kite Festival, La Vulandra.

The kite is not just a game: there is a very important technical, historical and scientific history behind it. Before the invention of the plane, the kite was something that defied physics and managed to fly. Its function was not only recreational: throughout history, it was used for meteorological research, aerial photography, and studies for aircraft developments. The Gruppo Aquilonisti Vulandra (Vulandra Kite Group) in Ferrara is responsible for continuing this knowledge and disseminating the importance of the kite.

Green light for creativity

During the days of the Festival, there is free rein for static and acrobatic kite displays, both single and team, construction workshops for children and advanced aerobatic flying courses for professionals and enthusiasts, and exhibitions of images from flying fields around the world.

Each year the Festival presents a 'project', a theme that serves as the theme of the edition to stimulate the creativity of kite flyers. To ensure the 'wow' effect, this festival has always involved artists, individuals or groups, to come up with innovative and spectacular models and designs.

There are kites of all sizes, from those as big as a postage stamp to those with unimaginable dimensions: the flying saucer made for the 2022 festival for example weighed 25 kilos and was 10 metres in diameter. But there are even bigger ones.

To build them, one relies on experience but gives free rein to imagination and experimentation to achieve special results, different from the usual. The festival is also a time for individuals or groups to meet and exchange ideas, to see and understand what others have done and to renew their passion.

Come and discover the magic of kites at the Urban Park from 22 to 25 April.

A unique opportunity for the whole family to admire real works of art and perhaps, why not, have a pleasant picnic in the spirit of spring.
